The Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) was a pioneering paramilitary organization made of female civilian pilots within the US Air Force during World War II. It was created on August 5th, 1943, bringing together two squadrons created the year before: the Women's Flying Training Detachment (WFTD) and the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS). At that time, the unit had 1,000 members. It was disbanded on 20 December 1944.
On September 30, 1943, the militarization of the WASP was completed. Jacqueline Cochran and General Arnold wanted a separate corps, led by a female colonel. The War Department, however, did not approve. Instead, it preferred that these women be integrated into the Women's Army Corps (WAC) and thus added to the 2,000 or so officers already assigned.
On 21 June 1944, the House of Representatives' bill to give military status to the WASP was buried after the closure of civilian flight training schools and powerful lobbying. In addition, the House Civil Service Commission had reported on June 5, 1944 that it considered the WASP unnecessary and excessively costly, recommending that the recruitment and training of female pilots be discontinued.
