The Flying Tigers was the nickname given to the members of the 1st American Volunteer Group, or AVG. Based in China during the Second World War, the squadron took part in the Sino-Japanese War and the Burma campaign. It was disbanded in 1942 and its assets were integrated into the United States Army Air Forces, in which its men took part following the United States' entry in the Second World War.

With civilian passports, the recruits arrived via Burma, where they landed in Taungû. Until then, the Soviet Union had provided unofficial support to the Chinese through a squadron of fighter aircraft under the name Soviet Volunteer Group. The withdrawal of Soviet pilots following the Japanese-Soviet non-aggression pact made the support of the Chennault group all the more necessary. The American squadron were named 1st American Volunteer Group in 1941,

The squadron's nickname comes from a painting Eric Shilling, one of the pilots, made on the nose of his plane, depicting a gaping shark's mouth. It was itself inspired by the paintings made by Messerschmitt Bf 110s pilots of the Haifischgruppe ("Shark Group", actually II/ZG 76) of the Luftwaffe.
