Rosie the Riveter is an internationally known and cherished emblem of American pop culture. It was originally created as an allegory of the six million women who worked in the arms industry and produced war matériel during World War II, when most men were fighting at the front, as part of a press campaign launched to convince the population that women could actively participate in the war effort rather than staying at home or working in traditional sectors such as the textile industry.

The character later became both a feminist icon and a symbol of the emerging economic role played by women in the United States. The general depiction of riveters dates back to the early 20th century, and the construction of skyscrapers in Chicago and Manhattan (New York), including the remarkable work of the "sky boys" during the completion of the Empire State Building.
